How Long Does Diesel Fuel Burn Up and Store for You?

How Long Does Diesel Fuel Burn Up and Store for You?

If you use diesel fuel on a day-to-day basis in your business, you’re likely familiar with it.

If you use diesel fuel on a day-to-day basis in your business, you’re likely familiar with it. It is pretty important to understand how much fuel you use, how you store it, and how you monitor what it is you have. However, it can be helpful to know how long the fuel burns as well as the shelf life. Read on to learn more about how long diesel fuel burns and how long you can store it!

How Long Does the Diesel Burn?

The answer to this question truly depends on how you use the fuel. Diesel engines are much more efficient than ever, so you’re likely to get more out of the fuel no matter how the business uses it. However, knowing just how long it burns when it comes to diesel purchases can still be helpful. A few common uses of this product are:

  • Vehicles: Burn rates are calculated the same as normal gasoline, but real-world use tells a much different story. It is best not to take any manufacturer’s ratings as a solid concrete representation of miles per gallon. Instead, consider using the MPG provided as an estimate and calculate your own mileage to help see how long your fuel truly burns.
  • Generators: To see just how long diesel burns in generators, you have to take the size of every machine and the load being run. Industrial generators can burn up to 150 gallons of diesel fuel per hour, while smaller ones can use as little as 0.6 gallons. These machines will run the most efficiently at about 75 to 100 percent of the recommended rating.
  • Marine Engines: When it does come to boats, fuel usage and how long diesel burns is calculated at brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC). This is shown as gallons of diesel per horsepower. The vehicle’s BSFC rating will tell you just how long the engine can run, and, therefore, how long your fuel will burn.

How Long Does Diesel Last In Storage

You might be more worried about how long this product will stay in storage when it comes to your budget and fuel buying. Diesel expires at some point, and if you use it, that might result in engine damage. The usual shelf life of diesel without additives is around a month, and the low-sulfur content of this fuel will mean that more bacteria and contaminants could affect it.
