Average Diesel Exhaust Fluid Problems to Take Care Of

In this blog, we’ll highlight diesel exhaust fluid issues one could face while handling the fluid for their vehicles.

Diesel exhaust fluid is a crucial component in the automotive industry’s efforts to create diesel-powered vehicles more environmentally friendly. Many countries and regions have implemented rigorous emissions regulations to address air quality concerns. DEF enables diesel engines to comply with these different standards, ensuring that vehicles meet the required emission limits and also are in compliance with environmental laws. In this blog, we’ll highlight diesel exhaust fluid issues one could face while handling the fluid for their vehicles, and provide solutions to help ensure excellent performance and longevity for your cars. Read on to learn more!

How to Understand Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Diesel exhaust fluid is a solution made mainly of urea and deionized water. The usual concentration is about 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. DEF is a crucial component in the Selective Reduction systems of modern diesel engines. The main purpose of DEF is to help reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions that are produced during combustion in diesel engines. When ejected into the exhaust stream, diesel exhaust fluid undergoes a chemical reaction in the SCR catalyst, breaking down nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water vapor, too.

Usual Diesel Exhaust Fluid Issues and Their Solutions

Sharing equipment like containers or funnels previously used for other fluids could introduce foreign substances into DEF. Water contamination could happen if DEF is exposed to moisture during storage, leading to diesel exhaust system issues. Using containers and funnels just for DEF can avoid any cross-contamination. Store diesel exhaust fluid in clean, sealed containers, and make sure that storage facilities are free from contaminants and dust. Protect DEF from exposure to direct sunlight since ultraviolet (UV) light can degrade its quality. In case of contamination, you could perform fuel polishing to restore the fluids to their premium state.
