The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

A lot of vehicles require different types of gas to operate.

A lot of vehicles require different types of gas to operate. Most vehicles take regular, while many others require premium gas. The differences between these two grades of gasoline are not totally obvious, which has led to a lot of misguided spending at your pump. If you are not sure what should be filled in your vehicle’s tank, then read on!

What Are the Primary Differences Between Premium and Regular Gas

Regular gas is rated around 87 octane in most states, while premium gas is usually higher at around 90 or 93. Fuel with a much higher octane rating can stand up to a much higher compression before it does detonate. Basically, the higher your octane rating, the lower the likelihood that detonation happens at the wrong moment. On occasion, this occurrence won’t hurt your vehicle. However, if it does happen frequently, it might quicken the decline of your engine’s overall performance. Engines with a higher compression ratio or turbocharger usually require much higher octane fuel found in premium gas for optimal performance and overall fuel efficiency. However, the majority of vehicles on the road today are fully optimized to run on regular gas.

If You Don’t Require Premium Gas, Fill Up with Regular Gas

Why pay top dollar for something you do not need? Premium gas costs can run you about 50 cents more per gallon than regular and have no positive or negative effects on vehicles that can’t take advantage of it. In a lot of cases, using a higher-octane gasoline than your owner’s manual’s recommendation offers next to no benefit. It will not make your vehicle perform any better, go faster, get better gas mileage, or run cleaner.
