How Sulfur Effects Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel Fuel

Ultra-low-sulfur diesel is a modern fueling mainstay, and many drivers might not think twice about what “ultra-low-sulfur” truly means.

Ultra-low-sulfur diesel is a modern fueling mainstay, and many drivers might not think twice about what “ultra-low-sulfur” truly means. Sure, sulfur itself has a very noticeable odor, but why is a lower sulfur content better for fuel? You might be surprised to learn that fuel’s overall fuel content is much less relevant to your engine’s performance than it is to the emission control systems that exist in modern diesel vehicles. In today’s blog, we’ll go over the impact of sulfur within ultra-low-sulfur diesel and all other similar fuels. Read on to learn more!

What Makes Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Any Different From Low-Sulfur Diesel Fuel?

Ultra-low-sulfur diesel, or ULSD, and low-sulfur, or LSD, seem quite different at first glance. The main difference between ultra-low-sulfur diesel and low-sulfur diesel is the maximum amount of sulfur allowed in each: up to about 15 ppm for ultra-low-sulfur diesel and up to about 500 ppm for ultra-low sulfur diesel. While a difference of 485 parts per million might not seem like that much, this small difference could severely impact a modern vehicle’s emission control system. Sulfur could wreak havoc on systems designed to help lessen the environmental impact of a diesel engine’s emissions, and damage to the pollution control devices can be very expensive to fix. Therefore, ultra-low sulfur diesel is the best kind of choice for vehicles with emission control systems.

Why Have A Lot of Consumers Made the Switch to Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel?

The fuels we use to help power cars, machines, and heating systems have changed a lot over time thanks to advanced scientific research, advances in fuel efficiency, and within government regulations. The United States government implemented mandates back in 2010 that require pumps to help offer ULSD instead of low-sulfur diesel. Although the switch for most consumers from LSD to ultra-low-sulfur diesel, using ultra-low-sulfur diesel in modern diesel trucks has all types of benefits in terms of different maintenance costs and environmental impact as well.
